Celebrating March – National Kidney Month!

March is National Kidney Month. It is a time to focus on kidney health, early detection, and the life saving power of transplantation. At Donate Life Kentucky, we support kidney patients at every stage. Our work focuses on prevention, early detection, transplant education, and patient support after transplant.

Early Detection and Prevention

Through our Kidney Health Screening Program, we have brought over 500 free kidney health screenings to communities across Kentucky. These simple tests help identify early signs of kidney disease so individuals can seek treatment sooner. Early detection matters. When kidney disease is caught early, treatment can slow its progression and sometimes prevent kidney failure and dialysis. By meeting people where they are at community events, health fairs, and outreach programs, we help more Kentuckians understand their kidney health and connect with care earlier.

Education and Transplant Access

For individuals living with kidney failure, transplantation offers the best opportunity for a longer and healthier life. Without transplant, many patients spend years on dialysis while waiting for a donor. Donate Life Kentucky works every day to educate the public about organ, eye, and tissue donation and to grow the donor registry so more patients can receive the kidney transplant they need. Transplant give people the opportunity to return to work, family, and the activities they love.

Supporting Patients After Transplant

Our work does not stop when transplant happens. Through our Post Transplant Patient Assistance Fund, Donate Life Kentucky has helped 654 kidney transplant recipients over the years with critical financial support during recovery. These funds help patients with expenses such as medication, travel to transplant appointments, and other essential needs while they regain their health. For many families, this support makes the difference between simply surviving and truly recovering after transplant.

Our Impact

Kidney disease affects millions of Americans, and thousands of Kentuckians are living with kidney failure. Through prevention, education, and donor registry growth, Donate Life Kentucky is helping to:

  • Detect kidney disease earlier
  • Encourage treatment before kidney failure occurs
  • Increase the number of registered organ donors
  • Help more patients receive life-saving kidney transplants
  • Support patients post-transplant through financial assistance and caregiver support
